However, the storyline would be more realistic and incorporate contemporaneity. Smriti Irani is coming out with a family drama that promises to be more entertaining.

On the distribution front, sources said the group has already tied up with DTH player, Tata Sky, to carry all its new channels, while the agreement with Essel Group-promoted DTH service provider, DishTV, is yet to materialise.

The news channel - 9XNews would be launched in the first quarter of 2008, while the rest of the channels would come subsequently.

When asked if the company is facing any regulatory hurdles, Peter said, "There is nothing like that... our plans are firmly on track."

However, he declined to specify the investments which the company is making to launch the new channels.

The entertainment company INX Media has been financed by some of the world's leading investors including Asia Investment firm Temasek Holdings via Duneam Investments, New Silk Route, New Vemon, Kotak and SREI Group.

Indrani Mukerjea would be the chairperson of INX News, while Vir Sanghvi would be the CEO and Editorial head of the news channelstarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845534186333043957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29790080.post-87310958777719512782007-10-25T12:01:00.000+05:302007-10-25T12:01:00.000+05:30Infinium joins DTH race NEW DELHI: Infinium Ltd, a...Infinium joins DTH race

NEW DELHI: Infinium Ltd, an Ahmedabad-based turnkey solutions provider for satellite and broadband network connectivity, has joined the race to offer DTH service.

If it gets the nod, it will be the eighth DTH player. In most other countries, there are only one or two players.According to information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry sources, Infinium's application is being examined by the government.

Currently, there are three DTH operators — Dish TV, promoted by Essel Group, TataSky (a joint venture between the Tatas and the Star group) and DD Direct Plus (of Prasar Bharati).Reliance Communications, Bharti and Sun TV also have got the clearance to offer DTH services.

While Sun and Reliance are expected to launch their services by the end of this year, Bharti is scheduled to launch it early next year. Bharat Business of the Videocon group was issued a letter of intent (LoI) recently. There were at least two more applicants - Noida Software Technology Park Ltd (NSTPL) and Essel Shyam Communications-but neither are in the race any longer.

While the government is believed to have rejected the NSTPL application for not paying the entry fee, Essel Shyam didn't pursue its application as the group already had Dish TV going. An analyst report prepared by Kotak group has pointed out that the entry of more players would coincide with potentially aggressive pricing strategies in the DTH space.

The report has added that "DTH subscriber volumes would grow strongly over the next several years, led by rising affordability".Recently, Dish TV CEO Arun Kumar Kapoor told DNA Money that "there's room for 4-5 DTH players in the country".

By 2015, 40% of the pay TV universe (cable TV and DTH) are likely to be DTH users, significantly up from around 5% now, according to industry projections. At present, Dish TV, with 2.3 million subscribers, and TataSky, with around a million users, are the only two pay DTH platforms in the country. Prasar Bharati's DD Direct Plus, with around 2 million subscribers, is a free-to-air platform.starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845534186333043957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29790080.post-65200774900036534862007-10-25T11:58:00.000+05:302007-10-25T11:58:00.000+05:30Korean co to make set-top boxes for Tata Sky Chenn...Korean co to make set-top boxes for Tata Sky

Chennai: To keep pace with the demand, direct-to-home (DTH) service provider Tata Sky has entered into an agreement to buy set-top boxes from Korean manufacturer Kaon Media, which will set up a manufacturing unit in Uttaranchal catering exclusively to Tata Sky, said Vikram Kaushik, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Sky Ltd.

The unit is likely to go "on stream" next month, he said without sharing how many set-top boxes (STBs) the facility could produce. This would be the company's third dedicated STB manufacturing facility after Thomson Electronics and Humax's units in Pune and Noida. However, about 90 per cent of components are imported.

"We have been facing a slight STB supply crunch in recent months. With Diwali nearing, we do not want to take any chances," Kaushik said during an interaction with media persons of The Hindu group. About 40 per cent of all television sales in the country happen during Diwali. Tata Sky is offering discounts on subscription depending on the size of televisions people buy this Diwali. For example, those buying a 21- inch television would get a 21 per cent discount on a Tata Sky subscription.

The company recently made available a collection of art films by directors like Akira Kurosawa on its movie-on-demand section and plans to add more such content in future including newly released Indian films.

About 10 per cent of Tata Sky's over 10 lakh users use its movie-on-demand and interactive television features.

When asked how DTH would impact the cable television business in India, he said DTH would not kill cable. "Nowhere in the world has DTH wiped out cable. India has about 7.5 crore cable connections. As DTH gains ground, these will have to become more efficient, providing more value," he said. Digitisation would be a way to do this, however, cable operators would have to invest heavily in such a venture, he said. The US cable industry spent about $90 billion (about Rs 3.60 lakh crore) over 10 years to upgrade to digital cable.

The addressable market for DTH in India is estimated to be about 7.2 crore households and by 2010, about 3 crore of these are expected to be DTH subscribers.starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845534186333043957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29790080.post-81908372098046369572007-10-25T11:56:00.000+05:302007-10-25T11:56:00.000+05:30Scat tradeshow to focus on digital cable The 16th ...Scat tradeshow to focus on digital cable

The 16th edition of Scat, the tradeshow for the cable and satellite industry, will focus on digital cable TV and fibre optics. The event runs from 25-27 October at the World Trade Centre in Mumbai.

Over 100 companies will exhibit products at the event. They include Tandberg, D-Link, Paras Electronics, Ortel, Scientific Atlanta, Catvision Products, Beetel. The focus this time will rest on digital cable TV and fibre optics.

This is because a lot of cable TV networks are migrating to fibre and digital cable. The cable retail market is large with over 20,000 cable headends and over 40,000 cable operators. There is thus a wide market for all levels of products ranging from SA-Barco to Chinese and local brands.

The organisers note that digital cable television's penetration is growing with 150 channels being rolled out in more than 25 cities before the end of the year. 50 new channels will be launched in the next two years. IPTV has already launched which means competition for the cable operators to upgrade their services and infrastruture.

As of now, there are over 3.5 million Indian DTH subscribers. Over five million FTA (free-to-air) Ku-band homes view DD Direct+. There is also a large emerging demand for DTH distribution equipment from multi-storied residential complexes in the metro cities. A renewed demand is also coming for RG-6 and RG-11 coax for DTH distribution.starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845534186333043957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29790080.post-62695894686790416512007-10-25T11:54:00.001+05:302007-10-25T11:54:00.001+05:30Bharti to launch IPTV in Delhi NCR Telecom major B...Bharti to launch IPTV in Delhi NCR

Telecom major Bharti plans to initially launch its IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) service in Delhi and the NCR region. Subscription revenues rose 10% to Rs,625 million and advertising revenues were up 28% to Rs2,195 million.

Subhash Chandra, Zee's chairman, said: "The Indian television industry is going through a very interesting phase of transformation from analogue to digital, which has positive implication for all the players in the media value chain. We are confident that the Zee Entertainment would be a big beneficiary of this change through unlocking of its revenue potential."

Another broadcaster, NDTV, which launched four channels in India during the quarter, saw revenues rise 46% to Rs670 million.

Sky-rocketing revenues are one reason even new entrants are attacking the sector with vigour. Ex-Star India executive Peter Mukerjea's new project, INX Media, has set aside Rs700 million for marketing for its suite of 12 channels, the first two of which, Hindi general entertainment service 9X and music channel 9XM are due to launch in mid-November.

And UTV's V&S Broadcasting, which recently launched youth-oriented channel Bindass and film channel Bindass Movies, will launch another service, World Movies by the end of the year, with another three channels planned by March 2008 and a further three to follow. The company has a reported budget of Rs5,500-6,500 million for the channels.

India's broadcasters are eyeing the growing cable and satellite subscriptions. Zee's sister DTH company, Dish TV, reported subscription growth of 54% for the quarter – 278,000 additions compared with 180,000 in the previous quarter. Revenues are rising quickly in tandem, up 19% over the previous quarter at Rs700 million. - © Rapid TV News 2007starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845534186333043957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29790080.post-4297424936084235852007-10-19T14:47:00.000+05:302007-10-19T14:47:00.000+05:30Now on Lanka Media OnlineComplete information on a...Now on Lanka Media Online

Complete information on almost all Sri Lankan Television and Radio networks.
