Dishtv offers Sun channels.

DTH player dishtv, which pioneered the platform in India, has made the entire Sun bouquet of 15 channels available to its subscribers, in the wake of TataSky doing the same two days ago.

Company officials had in August told that dishtv had already signed an agreement with Sun for carrying their channels, but would wait for the Sun DTH platform to start operation and go on air simultaneously, as that had been the tacit understanding between the two companies.

However, dishtv had also then said that if TataSky went ahead with their airing of Sun channels before Kalanithi Maran's Sun DTH operations start, they would break with that agreement and start carrying the Sun channels.

"This is precisely what has happened, as TataSky started carrying the Sun channels two days ago, so we informed Sun and with their consent, have started carrying the Sun bouquet from yesterday," a dishtv official said on condition of anonymity.

The addition of Sun channels takes up dishtv's offering to 180 channels in 12 languages across the country.

With the addition of Sun channels, the dishtv south Indian language line-up will now have 17 Tamil, 12 Telugu, 12 Malayalam and 10 Kannada channels, including channels from other southern broadcasters.

The new channels are an interesting mix of genres across general entrainment, news and music, movie and kids, in short, catering to the entertainment needs of the entire family.

The inclusion of new channels will also satisfy the needs of the southern language populace residing outside their home state, dishtv officials say.

Commenting on the occasion, Arun Kapoor, CEO, dishtv said, "Dishtv believes in offering variety to its subscribers. From the very beginning, we have aimed to cater to the language specific needs of the regional belt spread across the length and breadth of the country."
Kapoor adds that it has been dishtv's constant endeavour to incorporate tastes and preferences of our subscribers in the offerings.

"Dishtv enjoys strong support from Southern viewers and is completely in tune with their entertainment preference," he says.

By this move, dishtv now has the complete southern bouquet of channels which can cater to and will be of interest for all southern language speaking audiences.

The Sun channels will be available under four different packages, namely Dish Freedom- 100 channels @ Rs. 150, Dish Freedom plus-105 channels @ Rs. 200, Dish Welcome-130 channels @ Rs. 300 and Dish Maxi-159 channels @ 350.

DTH likely to be a costly affair for new entrants in INDIA.

The cost of acquiring direct-to-home (DTH) subscribers could be 70-80 per cent higher for new players like Sun Direct, Bharti and Reliance Bluemagic than the existing players like Dish TV and Tata Sky. Industry experts attribute this to the superior technology and expensive set-top boxes they plan to use.

At the moment, the Zee group's Dish TV gives a subsidy of about 25 per cent on the total package to each subscriber, while Tata Sky provides a subsidy of 34 per cent. Dish TV has 2.3 million subscribers, while Tata Sky has acquired over one million subscribers within one year of its launch in August last year.

Experts say this is because Dish TV and Tata Sky use the MPEG-2 technology which have set-top boxes 30 per cent cheaper than those which will be used by Sun Direct, Bharti and Reliance Bluemagic.

All the three players entering the DTH business operate their DTH service through the MPEG-4 technology, the set top boxes of which come at $54-57 (Rs 2,160-2,280) a piece. This is significantly costlier than the set top boxes offered by the existing companies like Dish TV ($34) and Tata Sky ($40).

According to a senior executive of Sun Direct, the main reason for using the MPEG-4 technology is the enhanced picture and sound quality for the existing channels: "Using MPEG-4 will help us acquire more subscribers due to the superior viewing experience for consumers, even though it may be costlier than the existing DTH technologies."

The main difference between the two technologies is the higher number of channels carried per transponder under MPEG-4 in comparison to MPEG-2.

Currently, the cost of a Dish TV connection comes to Rs 3,500 (with a subsidy of Rs 600-900), while it is Rs 4,000 for Tata Sky customers (with Rs 1,200-1,400 subsidy). The main element of subsidy comes on the hardware, including the set-top box, the antennae, wires etc.Sun Direct is offering its boxes for free, thereby straight away bearing a subsidy burden of over Rs 2,200 per subscriber which is 120 per cent more than Tata Sky, an expert said.

Sun Direct was launched on September 21 at a low price of Rs 75 per month per subscriber. The offer promises a free set-top box and dish antenna with two months' free subscription, exclusive of installation charges and taxes of about Rs 1,100.The service was launched all over Tamil Nadu with 75 free-to-air TV channels and 15 radio channels. The DTH service from Bharti and Reliance are expected to be launched by the year-end.

Raj TV to launch new 24x7 Tamil news channel

Raj Television Network on Monday said it has received approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for launching a 24x7 Tamil news channel. The company plans to start the channel on November 14, Raj Television said in a communique to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

"It would be a seven-day per week news channel in Tamil language covering all types of general news, business news and other news both national and international," the media firm said.

Raj Television targets to increase its market share with the launch of the channel, Raj Television said.Earlier, in mid August, the company had launched Kalaignar TV and Raj Musix. While, Kalaignar TV is a general entertainment channel catering to all sections of people with programmes including movies, news, serials etc, Raj Musix is a music channel consisting of mostly youth centric programmes.

The company had also signed a two year agreement with the Singapore government-owned TV 12 for exporting content to Vasantham Central, a free-to-air channel airing programmes for the Indian community there. The firm is targeting similar tie-ups with broadcasters in Malaysia, Thailand, Fiji, the UK and the US.

Raj TV Network, which telecasts on two widely viewed channels Raj TV and Raj Digital Plus,' posted a revenue of Rs 38.64 crore for the 2006-07 fiscal, an increase of 22.64 per cent from the previous year.Shares in the company were last trading down 2.57 at Rs 223.40 on BSE.

Reliance Bluemagic to launch its DTH services soon

The DTH space is getting hotter and heavier and it was only very recently that Marans' Sun Network offered its DTH services - Sun Direct. Now, industry sources claim Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group's (ADAG) Reliance Bluemagic too will launch its DTH services very soon.

What's more, it's looking for a tie-up with the recently launched Kalaignar TV, a channel owned by DMK chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's family, to compete with Marans' Sun Network.

Reliance ADAG Chairman Anil Ambani is believed to have spoken to the top officials of Kalignar TV seeking the channel's blessings to ensure the success of his new venture.

"He spoke to them a few days back. During the telecon, he said Reliance would softlaunch its DTH services between November and December 2007. Initially, Reliance will offer its services to a select few customers," sources close to Kalaignar TV said.

The prospect of a tieup between Reliance and Kalaignar TV generates a great amount of curiosity since industry experts see it as an attempt to take the battle to the DTH space. Kalaignar TV which has ensured an impressive opening with an excellent TRP rating is already being seen as a potential threat to Sun TV's established market leadership.

Determination on the Kalaignar's part to fight it out with Marans got manifested further when the DMK government recently announced, it'd set up its own cable distribution network to neutralise the monopoly of Marans' Sumangali Cable Vision. It's believed Reliance in tieup with Kalaignar TV will price its services well below that of Sun Direct which plans to offer 75 channels for Rs 75.

In fact, Reliance Bluemagic would be the fifth player to offer DTH services in the country followed by DD Direct, TataSky, Subhash Chandra owned Dish TV and the recently announced Sun Direct.

Interestingly, Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti subsidiary, Bharti Telemedia also holds an LoI from the I&B ministry for its yet-to-be-launched DTH services. Raj TV is yet another aspirant from Tamil Nadu which is trying to get into the DTH market this year.

Marans' Sun Direct presently in the process of collecting subscription is yet to beam its DTH services. Sources said Reliance timing its DTH soft-launch and tying up with Kalaignar TV can negatively impact Sun Direct.

"Reliance Bluemagic has already received its transponder space and would be officially launched by February 2008," sources said, but declined to disclose any further details.

Kudos for LBN for giving us Saudi TV. However, we should remind ourselves that Saudi TV is not a pure Islamic Channel like EWTN or GOD Tv. It is a channel from Saudi Arabia. Since they provide God TV,EWTN and Dharmavahini I think there is a duty on them to put up a Pure Islamic Religous Channel like The Islam Channel (Like Dialog TV have done) or Peace TV.

What about a Religous Channel for Hindu people?

Both LBN & DIALOG Tv not giving religous channel for Hindu people.

KALAIGNAR TV STORMS TN AIRWAIRWAVES

In less than two weeks of its official launch, Kalaignar TV, the new entertainment channel promoted by family members of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has marched to the number three slot on the weekly TRP (television rating profile) chart. The Maran family- (grand nephews of Karunanidhi) controlled Sun Network's Sun TV and the group's movie channel K TV, occupy the number one and two positions.

Media sources say that this is only the beginning of a major turf battle between the ruling DMK party and Sun Network. The estimated size of the regional advertising revenues over which the battle lines are drawn is estimated at Rs 600-700 crore annually. Sun Network at present has an estimated 60-70 per cent share of this pie.

Over 100 staffers, mostly from the programming and production departments from Sun Network have already moved to Kalaignar TV.

A handful of content creators like AVM Studio and Kavithalaya (owned by movie director K Balachandar), who were with Sun Network until recently, have already sworn their allegiance to Kalaignar TV.

A few other powerful production houses are also waiting on the wings to move from Sun Network to the new television channel. "Some of those who are continuing with Sun Network are waiting to cash their carried forward free commercial time which the network owes them," says a network insider.

Production houses like Radan Media Works, owned by noted actress Radhika Sarathkumar hold free commercial times (FCT) worth Rs 5-6 crore pending encashment.Similarly UTV also has FCTs worth Rs 5-6 crore to its account, pending from Sun Network.

FCT is the industry norm for payment to producers for providing programmes to the network. For every half hour worth of content, producers are given three to four minutes of FCT which they can sell to advertisers as 10-second spots and recover their cost and make some profit.

Kalaignar TV plans to make its presence felt stronger in Tamil Nadu with its proposed launch of a new music and daylong news channel, with an intention of hitting directly at Sun Music and Sun News.

Sun Network for its part is on the cusp of changing its distribution pattern by moving to the direct-to-home (DTH) platform and abandoning the 15-year old cable format. The network is even willing to provide the hardware equipment free and charge consumers only for the content. While Sun Network's domination is expected to continue for some more time, market observers clarify that it may not be so for long.

"The present monopoly position Sun Network enjoys cannot be taken for granted any more," said Nikhil Vohra, media stocks analyst with brokerage house SSKI Securities.

Despite the imminent threat faced by Sun Network from Kalaignar TV, the stock market has not panicked so far.

Since the official launch of the former, Sun TV stock price has not only remained stable but has also managed to record some minor gains. Between trading days September 17 and 28, the Sun TV counter has moved from Rs 329.55 to Rs 337.85.
