Minor sound problems

We have received some unconfirmed reports that sound quality on certain channels on LBN Digital are not up to the standard and the quality of the sound is varying from channel to channel. This may be due to the fact that LBN maybe still fine tuning their digital operations and we believe that it will be rectified soon.

It looks like LBN have resumed full commercial operations and have carried out a soft relaunch and have already issued bills to their subscribers.

We are unable to confirm when LBN will be introducing the channels such as HBO Hits, HBO Family, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Travel & Living but we feel that these channels will be available once all the fine tuning of the digital transmissions is completed.

If anyone is able to confirm the date of the launch of the above channels please post a comment in the comments section of this blog.

SOUND LEVEL IS OK. ONLY THING IS WE NEED SOME CHANNELS TO THE BASIC PACKAGE. IF THE OPERATOR GIVING MONO SOUND, HOW LBN CAN GIVGE STERIO. IF THE SOURCE IS MONO THAT'S ENOUGH.
WHO IS NOTED THIS BLOG "MINER SOUND PROBLUMS" MAD PERSON,

I Disagree with Mr. SRIDARAN WELUPILLAI. The Sound Levels on LBN are inconsistent and has become a problem when switching channels. I hope LBN sorts out this problem soon.

before u buy DISH for 765/-, jus think, how many of those channels are in English ? and DO U ACTUALLY HAVE TIME TO WATCH 160 CHANNELS ????

@ Anon
Agree with AMD.
How many of the DishTV channels are in English? NOt many. LBN has a smaller selection, but you will be supporting a fully Sri Lankan company. Money will go to Sri Lankan employees for the development of Sri Lanka.

No use sending money to India if local operators provide similar services.

Dish TV has mostly Hindi crap, whatever the price is. And do you have time to watch 160 channels (at least the ones you can understand).

Though you get a huge hindi crap,The english programme selection of Dish TV is much ahead of LBN.I am not trying to hype Dish but thats the fact.DTV will have a superior content over LBN once the third transponder is activated, virtualy every channel LBN has and additional channels of high quality has been already lined up.

For LBN to get BBC they have to go through DTV who owns rights in SL.

There is no point in comparing content of each provider as it is a subjective point of view. What i may consider the best mix of channels will not be appealing to another. Ultimately it all comes down to individual taste. I personnaly am very happy with what i get through the LBN Premium package (and what they have lined up for us in the near future like Discovery T&L and so on). But i'm sure there will be a crowd out there who will want things differently. Ofcourse everyone has a choce of switching to the content provider who they think is the best suited to their taste.

There is no question about the channels lined up in the LBN, the quality and quantity of the cable bandwidth can never be achieved. Anyone who has the basic knowledge of networking can easily understand it. Just think about how much the telephone copper wire can do? Then how much coaxial cable can give!!!
Regarding the channels list, who ever has good understanding and looking into the feedback of the customers can definitely air best channels.
Someone posted content related to MONO sound TV channels, can you please List down all the channels which use mono sound (that is LEFT channel only) to uplink to satellite. Stereo is a system it can consists of any number of channels (like surround sound 5.1 channels or 6.1 channels) but with LBN right now we are talking about sound in dual channels (Left/Right channels). To my understanding all the satellite channels are dual channel audio system.

I agree with you guys,The subscriber has the choice and its a fact that lot of the guys will opt for LBN simply for its pricing as they presently offer the most reasonable pricing structure. With the launch of the digital facility they have upped their quality by leaps and bounds. But the problem is with their coverage which is about 0.2% of SL wheres DTV have 100%.

But if a household is covered by both.....

LBN has cheaper initial cost
cheaper monthly rental
more channels

It would be really great if LBN could give "premium" Channels to "Basic" Package subscribers in view of the New Year Holidays.

I have noticed that there is a timing difference in sounds of digital service. Have you noticed it?

E.g.you can't match the facial expressions with sound

there is a big delay in hearing the sound of a shot in cricket matches...

Sudhar said...

There will be always a minute delay between the analog signal viewing and digital signal viewing because of the processing time with in the DVB. But the picture and voice should not differ. If you can give and idea about the channels which have this variation then I can look for it. This sometimes happen with broadcaster itself so we have to isolate single incidents.
As far sound variation only couple of channels to be stabilized, like CNN right now only the RIGHT sound channel is working properly and Star Sports has little high volume compared to others.
If all the channels can be normalized to a certain level of dB it will be really good, but I have to point out that through Set-Top-Box you can set individual sound profile for each channels.

Last week I noticed this in ESPN, where Ravi, Wasim and Harsha had a discussion of world cup status. Where you cannot match their lip movement and what you here and in the highlights i clearly noticed that if a player guided the bowl to 3rd man, you here the shot while the bowl is travelling to that area rather than at the point it hits the bat.

I checked this with a tech guy. He said that they experience a slight delay at the moment and it is being given due care.

DIGITAL is wonderful technology, to me it’s a limitless potential but even to understand small concept it will take a long time.
I hope technical staff at LBN finds it interesting to work with their digital equipments and unleash the vast potential available with it to the customers.

Anonymous said...

I think analog is better beacause it doesnt have a pixel effect.

Sudhar said...

Regarding the sound variation from the picture. Its true, today I checked and found few channels has very minute sound difference. The channels are NGC, The History Channel, ESPN and Star Sports. The variation may be in the range of one second to less than one second.
Its very hard to notice since for most cases only from lip moments only one can find that there is a difference.

Whenever it starts raining the LBN digital connection starts to get disrupted, if the rain is heavy no picture or sound can be had on the receiver. Even after many complaints LBN has still not been able fix this issue.

Anonymous said...

Thats because of bad wiring.

Seems that LBN Digital is no different to Dialog TV. Both get disrupted for rain. But at least DTV has consistent sound, and at least EPG for a few channels.

Where is the high speed internet, EPG and consistent sound level we want? Where is the Discovery channel and HBO channels? I think LBN spoke too much too early. God knows when these will really happen.

Sudhar said...

The sound variation on these channels NGC, The History Channel, ESPN and Star Sports seem to be fixed. I found NO difference between the picture and the sound from sunday(15th April) morning.

Can someone help...

I have LBN Digital...

I did a new channel search and some channel names are missing. They are identified as Ch 1, Ch 2 etc.

Also, Is there anyway to set the time?

GUYS,THE SIRASA SUPER STAR GUY APPEARING IN THE MOBITEL ADVERTISMENT LOOKS AND ACTS LIKE A REAL PONNAYA,DOES MOBITEL THINK THAT THEY COULD CAPTURE A MARKET BY PUTTING JOBLESS PONNAYAS IN THEIR ADVERTISMENT? I DOUBT IT.

HAVE SOMEONE WITH SOME PERSONALITY A SPORTSMAN OR AN ACTOR,HAVING SAKKILIYAS OF THIS NATURE IN THEIR ADVERTISMENTS WILL RESULT IN PEOPLE BUYING MORE DIALOG CONNECTION.

Sudhar

Yes. It seems that LBN has rectified the sound/picture issue.

But as few guys noted, they still need to adress sound variation issues and stick to their big promises of bringing new channels.

Fully agreed with SIRASA SUPER STAR guys ponsy acts.
