No IPL for LBN subscribers

Due to the inability of LBN to transmit SET Max on their network, subscribers are unable to watch the IPL cricket tournament. This may be due to the fact that Dialog TV had exclusive rights to broadcast SET Max during the World Cup held last year but it is almost one year since the World Cup and LBN should have taken steps to secure SET Max on their network.

We hope that LBN management will take appropriate steps to secure SET Max within the next few weeks.

LBN should add all the SONY channels in their line up.

All the LBN customers are badly missing IPL matches. It is very very sad.

Unfortunately I think Dialog may be having some sort of official rights to all Sony Entertainment Television channels, for broadcast in Sri Lanka.

Otherwise I am sure LBN would have added the channels sooner or later.

This is why Dialog kept saying during the CWC that they have exclusive rights. The exclusive rights were to the SET channels, not just the World Cup.

SET should refrain from such limitations and allow all to use the feed provided that they pay for it.

Zee Tamil to go on air on June 15.

Zee News Ltd, part of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), is gearing up for the launch of its Tamil general entertainment channel Zee Tamil on June 15. The launch of Zee Tamil would be followed by a 24-hour Tamil news channel. The Group is also firming up its plans to foray into the Kerala market with a Malayalam GEC, which is expected to on air during the fourth quarter of 2008.exchange4media had earlier reported that ZEEL had appointed V Chandrasekaar Barathi (Chandru) as Business Head of Zee Tamil.

Zee Tamil has reportedly acquired the rights of most the Tamil films released after February 2008. Besides films, the channel would have heavy dose of live and interactive shows and a basket of seven fictions from day one.

Besides roping in some of the prominent production houses such as K Balachander’s Kavithalaya Productions and Pyramid Saimira for soaps, the channel also plans to have a high decibel marketing blitzkrieg in the run-up to the launch with a marketing budget of Rs 5 crore.

Zee Tamil is looking at a sustained launch rather than one single blast. The channel would soon have a creative agency on board to work on the launch promo.

Doordarshan targets 100 channels on DTH platform.

DD Direct Plus, Doordarshan's free-to-air direct-to-home service, aims to have a pack of 100 channels on its platform. It currently offers 46 channels, apart from 21 channels of All India Radio.

"We are targeting a package of 100 channels by the end of this fiscal. This has become possible by lowering the annual carriage fee that broadcasters have to pay," a senior source in DD tells Indiantelevision.com.

DD Direct has added Japan's NHK TV earlier this month. With this, it is beaming three foreign channels including Korean Broadcasting Corporation and Deutsche Welle.

"We expect another 10 foreign channels to join our platform soon," the source adds.

DD Direct brought down the carriage fee last year from Rs 10 million to Rs 2.5 million along with a service tax of Rs 300,000. Foreign broadcasters, however, have to pay a carriage fee of Rs 5 million.

The imposition of the carriage fee of Rs 10 million had resulted in almost all news and many general entertainment channels quitting the platform. At present, the only private Indian news channel on the platform is Total TV.

The first DTH platform to be launched in the country, DD Direct had initially been launched by offering free carriage to different FTA channels. As a result, almost all the news channels had come on the platform. But many left when the carriage fee was fixed at Rs 10 million.

However, the sources said new steps were being taken to get back the channels and also invite newer FTA channels to join the platform. The reduction of the fee in mid-2007 had only been the first step, they added.

The sources said negotiations were at an advanced stage with Tara Bangla. The platform had recently seen the entry of music channels like B4U Music and 9XM, and some south Indian TV channels. The private channels include five music channels and two spiritual channels. DD Direct's bouquet includes 20 Doordarshan channels.

FOX TO LAUNCH 6 CHANNELS IN INDIA

India been a long wait for Rupert Murdoch's Fox Group. While Murdoch's STAR Group maintains a strong presence in India, the Fox group - also controlled by Murdoch was apparently told to keep off the large Indian market.

Probably with the purge and revamp at STAR last year, Murdoch's policy seems to have changed in favour of Fox.

Fox has applied to the I&B ministry to launch 6 of its channels in India. These are : Fox Crime, Baby TV, FX (Fox extended), National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic Wild and National Geographic Music.

It is reliably learnt that like the other STAR channels in India, the 6 new Fox channels will be distributed in India by STAR-DEN, the 50:50 joint venture between Star India and Digital Entertainment Network.

DTH INDUSTRY BODY

On 16th April 2008, private DTH platforms have formed an umbrella body - DTH Operators Association of India (DOAI), on the lines of cellular operators and asked the government to address key issues, including high taxation.

Zee Group company Dish TV, Tata Sky, Reliance ADAG, Sun Direct and Bharti Telemedia are the members of the newly formed body.

Tata Sky CEO Vikram Kaushik claims that "the DTH industry is taxed so much that 56% of fees from subscribers is accounted for by tax."

Mr Tony D' Silva, CEO, Sun Direct said that they were the only player to completely subsidise equipment and offer its services at only Rs 75. Currently available only in the southern States, Sun is expecting to launch services in North India in a few months' time, said Mr D'Silva.

DishTV's own satellite to be launched by June.

Essel Group owned direct-to-home (DTH) service DishTV is all set to extend its satellite channel capacity to 420 with the launch of its own satellite Argani scheduled by June-end this year. Once operational, the satellite would also enable DishTV to provide broadband internet service to its subscribers.

DishTV, which has offered a free-of-cost set top box (STB) to all new subscribers with new connections, is looking at doubling its customer base of 31 lakh within next 45 days. The same is planned ahead of its Rs 800 crore satellite project being handled by Chinese satellite company ProtoStar.

Speaking to Business Standard , a DishTV official close to developments said, "Protostar has almost finalised the schedule for launch of DishTV's satellite from Kourou from French Guyana. We expect a launch in the last week of June the satellite would be operational by July second week. We will then have additional 14 Ku-band and 12 c-band transponders for satellite TV broadcast."

DishTV presently holds 9 c-band transponders on a European satellite NSS-6 and can show 220 TV channels. Being the oldest company in the market, it enjoys market leadership ahead of Prasarbharati's DD Direct Plus, Tata Sky and Sun TV services.

"We are planning to provide internet connection through DTH platform. Once the new satellite is operational, internet services would be feasible technically. Present DishTV users would have to exchange their STBs and dish to avail internet service if needed," the official added.

With the launch of its satellite and the scheduled entry of new players like Reliance and Airtel in the DTH market, DishTV has decided to offer free STBs to all its new subscribers. New subscribers who opt for the annual maxi package worth Rs 3,990 will also get to watch 67 movies-on-demand (MoD) free of cost.

A number of airlines are also in talks with DishTV to provide TV entertainment during flights. Presently, 20 planes operated by Kingfisher Airlines have DishTV systems installed. Indian Railways is also considering a proposal to install DTH systems in long distance trains, for which, DishTV remains a preferred player, the official added.

Dish TV to roll out HD technology platform by year-end

With high definition technology catching the imagination of premium quality video and audio lovers, direct-to-home service provider Dish TV will launch high definition (HD) platform by the end of this year. The company, which recently announced free set top boxes (STBs) for its subscribers, has plans to introduce the latest Motion Picture Expert Group 4 (MPEG) technology enabled STBs along with the HD platform for broadcasting. It is also holding talks with TV channels for production of HD content.

"We will launch HD platform along with MPEG 4 coming Diwali for the subscribers. We are also talking to a 2-3 TV channels and get into commercial arrangements for High Definition content," Dish TV Managing Director Jawahar Goel told PTI.

High definition content, whether images or videos, have greater resolution than traditional standard resolution. The images and pictures appear more clear and sharp.

The sound quality is also enhanced.Existing DTH players Tata Sky and Bharti Telemedia, which are soon expected to announce their entry into the domain, are also equipped to provide HD platforms to its audiences.

"We have the HD technology ready with us, but there is no content in India at the moment. We will bring the technology in the market whenever the market is ready for it," Tata Sky Chief Marketing Officer Vikram Mehra said.

Similarly, Bharti Telemedia Executive Director N Arjun said, "The equipment which we are using is HD enabled, at the moment we will launch the service in standard definition but going forward will bring in HD."

MPEG 4 can provide 30 per cent more channels than the present technology. On MPEG 4, 21-22 channels can be beamed, on the other hand only 16-17 channels can be beamed by MPEG 2.Besides HD, the service providers are also expanding their offerings by introducing digital video recorders which would enable the consumers to record the content as and when desired.

Towards the end of this year, Dish TV would launch its Digital Video Recorder DVRs, while Tata Sky would introduce Personal Video Recorders PVRs in the market.

Isro to launch three more satellites to cover DTH demand

Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), the country's space agency, will launch three satellites for direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcast in as many years to cater to growing demand from operators such as Dish TV India Ltd and new entrants such as Reliance Big TV Ltd.

India's DTH market of around 10 million subscribers is dominated by state-run broadcaster Doordarshan, which offers signals free for users with receivers, followed by premium services of Dish TV, the South-based group SunTV Network Ltd and Tata Sky Ltd, a venture by Tata Sons Ltd and Star India.

G. Madhavan Nair, chairman of Isro, said, "24 transponders are required (for this service) now." The three satellites, to be launched by the indigenous GSLV rockets, will have around 42 Ku-band transponders, some of which would be used for rural connectivity. Ku-band transponders are those used in DTH broadcast.

Isro has 36 transponders from both Indian and foreign satellites leased to existing service providers and new entrants such as Reliance Big TV, owned by the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, Videocon Ltd and Bharti Telemedia Ltd, a unit of India's largest mobile firm Bharti Airtel Ltd.Analysts say the entry of Reliance and Bharti, both aggressive in the consumer space, could accelerate growth in the DTH segment in India.

"What Reliance did when it entered the mobile business, you will see" in the DTH business now, said Lalitabh Shrivastawa, a researcher at Techno Shares and Stocks Ltd, a Mumbai brokerage. "Prices will drop and more people will switch to DTH."

In a June 2007 report, the brokerage predicted that India's DTH industry would grow 40% a year over 10 years.

Dish TV, India's first private DTH broadcaster, said the country may require an additional 72 transponders for DTH and TV broadcast by 2015.

"There is a need to have more dedicated satellites because 350-400 channels (have) to be carried (by each operator)," said Jawahar Goel, managing director of Dish TV, a unit of Zee Group. Dish TV uses 15 C-band and 11 Ku-band transponders on Indian satellites to beam signals to 3.2 million users and aims to reach five million subscribers by March.

Public broadcaster Doordarshan estimates it needs 10-15 transponders in two years as it plans to increase four times the channels it delivers to its existing subscribers. Doordarshan currently beams 50 channels on its free-to-air or DTH service without encryption to its users, estimated to be around five million.

Each transponder in a DTH satellite can beam 10-12 channels, but new satellites with Mpeg-4 technology, that compresses signals, can carry 15-16 channels. The new technology is being used by Bharti and Reliance in their ventures.

"There is huge demand for DTH across India. Growth depends on (availability of) transponders," said a Doordarshan executive, who did not wish to be named. The state broadcaster uses five transponders on India's Insat-4 B communication satellite.

Reliance declined comment, while executives of Videocon and Bharti Telemedia could not be reached.

Sterling Group expects to launch DTH service

The C. Sivasankaran-promoted Sterling Group is set to launch DTH services by early 2009 under a new business — ETH Air TV. In an attempt to differentiate its services, the company is positioning itself as a platform with a focus on educational content, and that's why Education to Home or ETH.

An application for a licence is pending with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting but talks with financial institutions, vendors, technology partners and broadcasters have started. The company is expecting to close all its agreements as soon as it has its Letter of Intent from the Ministry.

It already has an agreement with ISRO, and has been promised six transponders on the Insat 4G satellite which will be headed spaceward around May-June 2009; an interim accommodation could be arranged before that if ETH Air TV is ready with its backend infrastructure.

There are more channels than space on current DTH platforms, and ETH Air TV could accommodate these homeless, new channels who are willing to pay carriage fees to reach consumers, according to an industry source. It would also be tapping into regional markets with more local, or city-specific content, focussing on coaching classes, for example.

No service would be viable without the popular general entertainment channels though and ETH Air TV will offer the same but will add more niche content to its portfolio, both acquired and possibly even developed in-house. The service will be offered on mpeg4 (or with superior compression technology) Set Top Boxes that it will source from vendors and could be significantly subsidised at launch.

A Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S) technology will be able to accommodate around 120 channels; a DVB-S2 option will take the number of channels to more than 160.

Of the six licensees, there are three DTH players in the market already, including Sun Direct, which is a strong player in South India benefiting from the Sun Network's popular content. Reliance ADAG's Big TV and Bharti's DTH venture are also expected to launch soon. ETH Air TV is nonetheless confident of breaking through the tough market by positioning itself differently.

Sterling Group's telecom interests were placed under Siva Ventures which has an eight per cent stake in Tata Teleservices. However, the company is housing its DTH business under Shanmugam Realty and Housing Ltd, according to sources.
